Sociedade Brasileira de Análise Bioenergética

The 6th Brazilian Psychology Congress / Congresso Brasileiro Psicologia took place from November 11 to 15, 2022, in São Paulo. It brought students, professors, clinicians, and researchers together with the shared goal of searching for effective solutions to practical issues in the field of psychology and related areas.

That was a unique opportunity to talk about Bioenergetic Analysis to our peers and, therefore, raise a banner for the power of the tools we have in our hands.

SOBAB was represented in the Congress by six of its members:

• ♥ Eulina Ribeiro (with Maê Nascimento and Mariângela Donice) talked about The Body and the Social Brain.
• ♥ Ana Lúcia Faria talked about Bioenergetic Analysis and Group Work.
• ♥ Lorene Gonçalves Soares, Phd, talked about Caring for the Body, for Groups and for Life.
• ♥ Clarissa R. Batistela & Paulo Rui F. Vasconcelos talked about Grounding – a Quest for a more Vibrant Life.
• ♥ Lidiane A. de Araújo e Silva talked about Silenced Bodies: Self-perception, Self-expression, and Self-control as a Means to Become a Subject.
• ♥ Ana Lúcia, Clarissa, Lidiane & Paulo together presented a session entitled Bioenergetics and our Social Clinic: Rescuing the ethical political aspect at the core of the neo-Reichian practice.

A bioenergetic intervention that I used with a client

Using Lowenian ideas of the body holding trauma, this is was a brief intervention I used to enable a client to move forward.

A client, G, often said he was stuck and had no confidence. His mother had always taken his part at primary school and as he grew older had a group of far bigger friends to defend him. G said he’d never learned to stand up for himself and only questioned why someone’s behaviour was attacking him. Any of the “pretend” scenarios we worked with, left G helpless and generally sitting rather than being able to stand to defend himself. He said he’d never learned how to do this independently and just wanted to understand why he was being attacked and threatened.

Despite doing grounding and allowing some anger to be expressed by wringing a towel or using the towel to bang on a chair, I still had a sense that G was stuck.

Getting him to stand up, I “saw” that his feet were stuck firmly on the ground. Kneeling behind him I held onto his feet and asked him to walk forward slowly. Initially G found had difficulty making the big effort to take a step. He did this, keeping his balance as though he was walking through mud and eventually pulling me along the carpet as he moved forward. We repeated this exercise a few times with G becoming excited that he no longer felt stuck.

The New Zealand Society for Bioenergetic Analysis

In the beginning of November, the New Zealand training group had a 5 day training toward the end of their 3rd year of training.

Their custom is singing a Maori song at the end of every training week. It was a joy working with them. They are so willing to do the work and eager to learn.

Southern California Institute for Bioenergetic Analysis

Diana Guest and Garet Bedrosian held a webinar showing a video demonstration of a client session about "Beyond Catharsis: Integrating energy for transformation”. That webinar was was organized and supported by USABP. In that workshop, you will see work with strong emotions, the release of chronic tension, movement of energy as well as cognitive integration necessary for transformation. Through clinical analysis, Diana and Garet discussed the energetic flow of the session.
